From a purely rational and logical perspective, we all understand and accept that flying is by far the safest mode of transport available, statistically even safer than riding a bike.
So why is it that so many people feel sick at just the thought of flying and dread forthcoming holidays or business trips? Why is it so many people resort to large quantities of alcohol or medication as a means to cope with the acute anxiety they feel?
Well we could spend an hour or so on this one, but keeping it really simple, it’s no surprise that so many people have a fear of flying – being on board a huge chunk of metal that weighs hundred of tonnes, travelling at 35,000 feet and some 500 miles an hour is not exactly a natural place for a human being to be!
And then there’s the bombardment of frightening images from the media; the outrageous fantasies of Hollywood; the misconceptions of society in general; and, the antics of the airline staff themselves (cue the stewardess showing us all where the nearest exits are in case of an emergency!).
With all this in mind, it’s amazing that any of us get on airplanes in the first place.

In treating a fear of flying, it is important to understand that consciously trying to control fear through rational thought alone can prove to be extremely difficult. The reason is that what we focus on we tend to amplify, so trying to think our way out of a fear of flying can lead to us creating evermore anxiety provoking thoughts, which can only serve to increase the symptoms.
But at the same time, trying the complete opposite of this strategy, i.e. avoid the situation completely by not flying can only exacerbate the problem by making the fear so much worse.
The reason we’re successful at helping clients to resolve their fear of flying is because we work across both the conscious and unconscious parts of the mind.
