Bus driving boxer has anxiety hypnotherapy to cope with crowds

by William Hobson

An amateur boxer who drives a national express bus by day has told The Mirror that he has been having anxiety hypnotherapy sessions to prepare for the pressure of an upcoming bout against an Olympic boxer.

Sam Horton, 24, will face off against former Olympic champion James De Gale in the super middleweight WBA international contest at Upton Park this month.

Horton, who normally drives coaches for National Express, has taken a five week break from his job to train full time for the fight. Bookies have made his opponent, also 24, a firm favourite for the fight but Horton is confident that he has a chance after losing just once in 16 consecutive fights.

However the driver of the number 120 and the number 140 from Dudley says that he is taking another form of preparation to make sure he is capable of overcoming anxiety caused by the big crowds of the Upton Park venue. Speaking at a boxing gym in Birmingham, Horton said that anxiety hypnotherapy sessions were helping him prepare for the pressures of fighting in front of such a large audience.

"I do it once a week and think it is really working," said Horton. "Hypnosis is also relaxing after a stressful day driving!"
